Who is Viessmann?

Viessmann has built heating technology for over 100 years, as a family-run business. In the 1960s it built multi-fuel systems that switched to whichever fuel was cheapest. During the 1970s oil crisis it pioneered solar thermal. Its first air-to-water heat pump shipped in the late 1970s, and one of those original units was still running in 2016. Viessmann also builds solar panels, batteries and EV chargers today. Until now, its most advanced heating products have mostly gone to the German market.

What is the Viessmann Vitocal 200-A ie?

The Vitocal 200-A ie is an air-to-water monobloc heat pump in Type 6, Type 8, Type 10 and Type 12 sizes. The whole refrigerant circuit stays inside the outdoor unit, along with the hydraulics, the circulation pump and the heating element. Indoors you get a Universal Controller with a 7-inch touchscreen: 45 cm wide, 40 cm high, 13.5 cm deep. Viessmann also sells an AIO Unit, which adds a built-in hot water cylinder.

What does it have to offer?

A+++ efficiency, even on radiators

All four sizes carry an A+++ efficiency rating, on underfloor heating (W35) and on radiators (W55). It supplies flow temperatures up to 70°C at outdoor temperatures down to -10°C. The refrigerant is R290 (propane), a natural refrigerant with a GWP of 0.02.

One footprint, four sizes

The outdoor unit keeps the same footprint (530 mm deep, 1,140 mm wide) across all four sizes; only the height changes, from 809 mm on the Type 6 and Type 8 to 1,009 mm on the Type 10 and Type 12. Weight ranges from 93 kg to 118 kg. Installers can cascade up to four outdoor units off a single controller on larger properties. It also won the iF Design Award 2026 for its casing.

One Base and the ViCare app

The ViCare app controls the Vitocal 200-A ie, on Viessmann's One Base platform. That platform brings solar panels (Vitovolt 300-DG), battery storage (Vitocharge VX3, 5-15 kWh) and EV charging into the same system as the heat pump, and schedules them around dynamic electricity tariffs. ViCare smart radiator and underfloor thermostats add room-by-room control.

Warranty and servicing

Viessmann backs every Vitocal 200-A ie with a 5-year guarantee as standard, already longer than a lot of heat pumps ship with by default. Keep it serviced regularly through Viessmann and that guarantee extends to 10 years, covering the compressor along with the rest of the unit. A compressor failure is typically the single most expensive heat pump repair there is, so a decade of cover against it is a real safeguard on what's usually a 15-to-20-year investment.

Technical specifications

Maximum output ranges from 5.7 kW (Type 6) to 10.2 kW (Type 12) at -2°C outside, and barely drops at radiator flow temperatures. Sound power (ErP) ranges from 48 dB(A) on the Type 6 to 55 dB(A) on the Type 12, with a low-noise operating mode on every size. Flow temperatures reach 70°C at outdoor temperatures down to -10°C.

Is the Viessmann Vitocal 200-A ie right for your home?

It suits a homeowner who wants Viessmann's engineering pedigree at a lower entry price. Type 6 to Type 12 covers most homes, from small flats to typical family homes, with up to 10.2 kW from a single unit. For larger homes, up to four outdoor units can be cascaded off one controller, simply and cheaply. The indoor controller is small enough for a utility room or airing cupboard.

Like other R290 heat pumps, it needs a clear exclusion zone around the outdoor unit, normally one metre in every direction, free of sockets, light switches and openable windows. Worth checking early if you're working with a tight urban plot or a small garden close to boundaries.
